Boston travel article

Another of my travel articles for the Philadelphia Gay News is now online. I worked at the PGN for two years as news photographer and was creator of the “Scene in Philly” nightlife entertainment photo page. Before I left for New York I was asked by editor Sarah Blazucki if I wanted to continue my relationship with the paper. I jumped at the chance and have since written pieces on New York, Chicago, Berlin and Provincetown. Thanks to Uma for escorting me around so I could get these photos of Boston and Cambridge:

I admit it wasn’t as cool as a Joe Jonas sighting, but Justin Guarini of the first-season “American Idol” fame was fun to see at a cast photo call at Theater 80 on St. Mark’s in Manhattan March 23, 2009.

From the press release: Set in a Hoboken Circus during the Great Depression, “The Awakening of Angel DeLuna” weaves the enchanting tale of Angelina “Angel” DeLuna, a fallen trapeze star whose faith is tested when a mystical stranger comes to dismantle her beloved carousel. As Angel’s carousel world comes crashing down around her – the lives of the entire circus troupe are forever changed as together they learn what truly matters in life.

From the press release: The Leary Firefighters Foundation, in partnership with The FDNY Foundation is proud to announce the dedication of the state-of-the-art High Rise training simulation facility on March 19, 2009.  The first and only of its kind in the country, the simulator will help firefighters improve their skills in combating the difficulties of fighting fires in high-rise buildings, performing rescues, and saving lives under extreme conditions.

The 4,000-square foot structure located at the FDNY’s Fire Academy on Randall’s Island, will feature a variety of real-life functions, including a fire and flashover simulator, a central smoke system, a dry standpipe system, mock elevators and stairways, video hookups on each floor for review and a simulated fire command station.  High-rise buildings retain heat and gases that can quickly spread and create hazardous conditions for firefighters, and the simulator will help recreate these scenarios, improving each member’s ability to predict the movement of a fire.

Natasha Richardson in New York

I photographed Natasha Richardson when she appeared at the amfAR gala at Cipriani on 42nd St. in New York, Feb. 12, 2009. The New York Daily News is reporting the worst. Such a strange thing to look at these pictures and see her bright eyes and vibrant smile.

“Gossip Girl” Leighton Meester at Lady Footlocker

Leighton Meester stopped by Lady Footlocker in New York’s Herald Square March 7, 2009 to introduce a new shoe called the Top Down for Reebok. The photo crowd was insane and I’m pleased to have come away with some usable shots. It was a beautiful day in New York so the store was full. Thanks to Melissa Pardo from Footlocker for helping out with the arrangements. To license any of the images, please contact the Everett Collection.

Hello!

empirestate-jasonsmith-2

It’s the new jasonsmith.com! For years I used Softpress Freeway to “update” my site. But guess what happened when using a proprietary program that was tied to my computer and not living out there “in the cloud?” Well…it was literally years between updates to that static content. Now I’m blogging and it seems a bit embarrassing after all this time to finally jump on the WordPress bandwagon! But here you are and here I am. So Welcome!

The Old Site is still here however.

Dan Anders for Judge in Philadelphia

Dan Anders by JasonSmith.com

Dan Anders by JasonSmith.com

I photographed judicial candidate Dan Anders at his campaign announcement in Center City originally for the Philadelphia Gay News back in January 2007. He later called on me to do his official campaign headshots. I enjoyed working with Dan so much that I was thrilled when he gave me the nod again and I came back to Philly from New York to work with him on location.

Here’s one of my favorites from our shoot on the Avenue of the Arts in downtown Philly. If you’re feeling like supporting an openly gay, dedicated public servant you can find out more about his campaign at Dan Anders for Judge.
